Renewable sources of energy
Autor: Mara Marasović Dundić, 19. 10. 2012.

On 12th October we went to Solin and visited Gašpina mlinica (Gašpina ‘s mill) , Gradina , spring of the river Jadro and  we also went to the solar house Čulić.

At Gašpina ‘ s mill we saw different objects which people used in the past. The keeper of the Mill told us that this mill was very important in the past.  People from the whole Dalmatia used to bring grain there. Sometimes they had to wait for days. The keeper showed us the way the mill worked. In the past there were 15 mills, but today just one is still working.

Ivan Kartelo and Antonio Roglić told us something about the past of the mill. They informed us that the mill was built in the early 18th century. They also said that the river Jadro is locally called Rika. Its structure consists of four low buildings in a row with gable roofs covered with stone plates. Over the centuries, its structure has been modified and upgraded, which is evident from the subsequently created windows on the facade. The building faces a north-south orientation and the water was directed through the channels from the east, free-falling to the lower parts of the mill.

Martina Ljubičić and Antonija Pinjuh told us how the bread was made in the past. They said that making bread today is a link to centuries past. Bread has been around for over 10000 years. The Egyptians are credited with inventing the oven and discovering leavening agents. Flour milling is credited to the Greeks. The Romans improved on the process, and then brought the art of bread making to Europe. From then until now, bread has developed a more festive quality.

Marija Petričević and Maria Bajić told us a story about Samson and Delilah, as we already spoke about them during our lessons at school. When Samson was captured after Delilah’s betrayal, and after she cut his hair, he was brought to a mill where he had to turn the mill in order to grind the grain.

After the mill we visited Gradina which first was built as a church, but when the Turks came to this part of Dalmatia  they made a fortification at the ruins of the church.

Then we went to the spring of the river Jadro. We saw beautiful nature and clean river. From this spring the whole town Split and its surrounding area gets drinking water.

The last thing to see was the company Čulić. This company at the roof of its building has solar panels. They don’t use this energy they sell it to “Elektro Dalmacija”. There we realized the importance of the solar energy as we live at the part of the world with a lot of days with sun.

Ante Smoljko told us something about types of solar energy. He said that solar energy technologies use the sun’s energy and light to provide heat, light, hot water, electricity and even cooling for homes, businesses and industry.

Željko Šarić told us about types of renewable energy. He said that these types can be solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, bioenergy, hydropower, ocean energy and hydrogen and fuel cells.

We all enjoyed in this kind of work.

Ante Smoljko, 7.a
